Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau, a 23-year-old Ottawa native, has taken his game to the next level during his loan stint with Vaasan Palloseura (VPS) of the Veikkausliiga, Finland’s top soccer league. On loan from Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Fleuriau Chateau has quickly made a name for himself in Europe.
After being selected 74th by Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the 2024 MLS Superdraft, Fleuriau Chateau was a standout player in MLS NEXT Pro. He made 24 total appearances with WFC2, on his way to setting a franchise record for most single season goals scored with 9. Fleuriau Chateau agreed to an MLS contract through 2025 with Vancouver in September of 2024.

In April 2025, Fleuriau Chateau joined VPS for the remainder of the Veikkausliiga season to further his development. Based in Vaasa, VPS is one of Finland’s oldest and most respected clubs. With an extremely passionate fanbase, VPS has consistently competed in the top tier of Finnish football and in recent years, have proven to be a strong contender for European competition spots.
Embracing a new country, club, culture, and style of play isn’t always easy, but Nicolas has made the transition look seamless. The warm welcome and open arms of both the club and the fans have made him feel right at home, and his play on the pitch reflects that.
“My time here thus far has been amazing. Everyone has been very welcoming from the very beginning, and I’m really enjoying my football. Vaasa is a very quiet and beautiful city, with very nice people who have a lot of passion for the football club.
It didn’t take long for him to settle into his new team, tallying an assist and 5 shots in his first match with VPS. Shortly after, he netted his first goal in just his second match with the team on their way to a 5-0 victory over Tampereen Pelitoverit in the third round of the Suomen Cup. He continued to make an impact with the team and two weeks later scored the game-winning goal against Ilves in stoppage time to lead VPS to a 1-0 victory. Fleuriau Chateau kept heating up and just five days later he found the back of the net again in the fourth round of Suomen Cup against Tampere United/2 helping his team eke out a narrow 2-1 win to advance. Fleuriau Chateau continued his scoring streak, adding another game-winner 26 minutes into the match against first-place KuPS on route to a 2-0 victory. With no signs of slowing down, he tallied yet another goal in a 2-1 loss against AC Oulu a few matches later.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity, and God willing I’ll be able to continue to perform the way I have.”
VPS currently sits in 6th place in the Veikkausliiga and look to get back in the win column after a few tight losses. With Fleuriau Chateau in peak form and wins over top teams such as KuPS, VPS look to keep the wins coming and power their way to the top of the league table.
With the Veikkausliiga season still in its early stages, Fleuriau Chateau can continue to build on his early success. With the chance to accelerate his development and showcase his skills against elite level competition, Fleuriau Chateau has made the most of his opportunity and is proving to be a high-value asset for Vancouver Whitecaps FC moving forward.
